Abstract. In this paper we provide necessary and su cient conditions for the pair of
matrix equations A1XA 1= B1 and A2XA 2= B2 to have a common hermitian solution inthe form
X1+X22 where X1 and X2 are hermitian solutions of the equations A1XA 1= B1and A2XA 2
